2021 begins and we continue with the challenge of organizing an international movement, linking local actions with our international action, reaffirming our solidarity among women around the world.

For this, communication is a permanent challenge. Communicating among ourselves and beyond our movement is essential for our strengthening.

We launch this newsletter with the hope that it is one more tool in the construction of the World March of Women.

2021 International Feminist Organizing School "Berta Cáceres"

The International School of Feminist Organization "Berta Cárceres" is an initiative of four organizations: the Grassroots Global Justice Alliance (GGJ), the Indigenous Environmental Network, the World March of Women and Grassroots International.

The intention of this school is to strengthen the popular feminist movement at the international level in the framework of the construction of a feminist and plural political subject. Through a series of workshops, each session will be facilitated in the style of popular education to deepen our collective knowledge, experiences, reflections and political practices. Together we will strengthen our resistance actions and deepen our understanding of Feminist Economics as an alternative emancipatory process for our own territories.

Our first virtual meeting will be the launch of the School on March 4, followed by a technical training on April 5, and then the development of the School's curriculum will begin, from April 12 to July 6. School sessions will be three hours long and will be held bi-weekly on Mondays and Tuesdays for three months.

Register here to participate in the celebration of the launch of the International School of Feminist Organization "Berta Cárceres".

Our communication

Communication is one of the key issues for the World March of Women. It is also a great challenge, even more so for an international movement like ours. Therefore, we keep thinking of ways to improve it and spread our feminism.

For this, we created channels on instagram, which will help us to send directly to all the news and information about our movement.

The channels are organized in three languages: English, Spanish and French. To access them, click on the links below:

Spanish: https://t.me/marchamundial
French: https://t.me/marchemondiale
English: https://t.me/worldmarchofwomen

We also created groups on facebook, so that we can exchange information among the companions of the March from different countries. We organize the groups by language.

Capire: feminist call for entries for photographs

On January 6 we launched, together with allied movements, Capire, a new feminist communication tool, with the aim of making visible the demands of women and peoples and contesting hegemony in society.

From the international portal Capire we launched a call for photographs and posters on the history of March 8. We want to organize a virtual gallery, in which all contributions together ignite some of the living and collective memory of feminism.

Choose your photographs and send them through the link below until 03/03/2021.

In addition to the new year, January 1 has another important meaning: it was the day the revolutionary forces overthrew the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista and took power in Cuba in 1959. Since then, Cuba has demonstrated the power of solidarity and of putting the lives of the people at the center of its policies: there is no lack of health and education, and it is one of the safest countries for women.

January 16 marked the fifth anniversary of the arbitrary detention of MIlagro Sala, in Argentina. To this day she continues to be detained, now under house arrest.
We share this letter in support and solidarity with those whose rights have been violated, and to demand Milagro's freedom. Access the letter here.

Our companions of the WMW of Quênia expressed their solidarity with the Saharawi people. Together, we sang: Wamama musilale, lale, lale. Wamama musilale, Bado mapambano, mapambano, mapambano (Women, wake up, the struggle has just begun).
January 26th is India Republic Day. On this day, we express our solidarity with Indian farmers. They have been protesting for more than 50 days to demand an end to recent reforms that deregulate the agricultural sector.
On February 8, 28 women workers died in a clandestine textile workshop in Tangier, Morocco. The women were electrocuted by a water leak that entered the workshop, located in the basement of a residential neighborhood. This is the precariousness of women's work! What happened is not a coincidence: it is the result of the imperialist and patriarchal policies of the transnationals and of the states that guarantee impunity for these companies.

Special: Sahrawi Women's Day

February 18th was the Saharawi Women's Day. From the World March of Women we want to send our solidarity to our Saharawi sisters on this day and express our recognition and admiration for their struggle for their freedom and that of their people.

It is absurd that a peaceful people should be forced to take up arms to achieve peace, freedom and autonomy. The Saharawi people have the right to defend themselves and to fight against the Moroccan occupation of their territory. Women are on the front line in this struggle, reaffirming the need to overcome this capitalist, patriarchal, racist and colonial system.
Throughout the day, our sisters sent us photos and videos of their demonstrations of solidarity with the Saharawi women. In all of them, creativity was present: from demonstrations with posters to music, the women made clear our solidarity with the demands of the Saharawi women.
Graça Samo, WMW International Coordinator, spoke about how on that day we joined hands to say that the struggle of the Saharawi people is the struggle of all women in the world.  Access the full video here.
In tribute to the Saharawi women, Sefu Sanni, from Kenya, sang a version of Miriam Makeba's song "A luta continua". Access the full video here, on Capire's channel.

The Mozambican companions showed their support for the Saharawi women in a poster demonstration, affirming that together we are stronger and better. "Our outstretched hand makes the other understand that there is hope", says one of them. Access the full video on our youtube channel.

Political education and movement building in Kisumu, Kenya

In January and February, WMW sisters from Kisumu, Kenya, carried out training and strengthening activities for the World March of Women in Kisumi, Kenya. They worked on issues such as strategies for building our movement, agroecology, food sovereignty and feminist economy. Access our website to read the full story.

Building bridges and alternatives: the fifth international action of the WMW in the Basque Country.

From October 17 of last year until March 6 of this year, the WMW sisters of the Basque country were engaged in the construction of the 5th International Action in their region. The action, which is still going on, is full of political debates about the capitalist, patriarchal and racist system that builds walls between peoples and bridges that only some can cross.

About the action, we talked with Luciana Alfaro Lavado, from the WMW of the Basque Country (Euskal Herria), so she could tell us a little more about the action and its objectives. Access our website to read the interview.

The International Peoples' Assembly

The International Peoples' Assembly (IPA) is a process that, for some years now, has been promoting popular internationalism, political formations and anti-imperialist struggles articulated from a great diversity of organizations and social movements. The World March of Women is represented in the IWA by Yildiz Temürtürkan, from Turkey/Europe.

The IPA had planned a series of actions for 2020, with a focus on anti-imperialist struggles against Trump, his administration and what he represents, against patriarchy, homophobia, against racism and for the self-determination of peoples. With the advance of the COVID19 pandemic, we had to rethink the actions, and we moved them to the online format. Webinars and online meetings were held with the participation of allied organizations and movements to analyze the situation, think about strategies of confrontation and reflect on this global phenomenon. In October, the activities of the Anti-imperialist Week were carried out, also considering the delicate moment of the elections in the USA. Among the activities of the Week, the World March of Women organized the seminar Feminist anti-imperialist struggles.

The political debate on the threats of hybrid wars, geopolitical disputes and authoritarian neoliberalism continues in different ways. Throughout 2020, an international virtual exhibition of posters on these issues was organized, in addition, in each region, the IWA has a dynamic of meetings and gatherings to organize actions and articulations. For March 2021, AIP is organizing a Feminist Festival.
